Glenstone: A Personal Art Collection in Washington, DC

Richard Serra. Sylvester. 2001.

We visited an exclusive, private art collection at Glenstone in June 2018. Glenstone is a private museum showcasing a collection of modern art located just outside of the beltway in the US capital. It is one of the most private art experiences you can get in the Washington DC area.

The museum was opened to the public in 2006 by Mitchell and Emily Rales as a place which perfectly blends art, architecture, and landscape. You will experience their collection of modern and contemporary art - paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs, installations, and multimedia works by artists who have come to international prominence since World War II - in a quiet setting indoors and outdoors. Opt in for a private guided tour to experience outdoor sculptures including Richard Serra's Sylvester.

Admission is free, but reservation is required. Open Thursday to Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm. Visitors must be of age 12 or older.

UPDATE: Glenstone debuted its new, expanded pavilions along with larger parking space in October 2018. Artworks on view include Dan Flavin, Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warhol in pavilions as well as outdoor sculptures by Richard Serra and Tony Smith. Online reservations usually gets fully booked as soon as the slots become available on the first day of the month at midnight. Tickets are available in 3-month increments, so plan your visit well in advance.
